Lois Lavani Friday, 02 October 2026 04:47 Comment LinkMost disc reading issues happen because the clear polycarbonate plastic layer gets scratched. The laser in your computer drive needs to pass through this plastic cleanly, bounce off the internal metallic layer, and reflect back to a sensor. If the plastic is scratched, the laser gets refracted and scattered—like a car headlight hitting thick fog. The drive cannot read the data below, even though the data itself is perfectly intact.

Elly Charters Friday, 02 October 2026 04:28 Comment LinkSometimes the physical disc looks pristine, but the data structure inside is broken. If a multi-session disc was not finalized correctly during burning, or if the Master Boot Table (the index that tells the computer where each file starts and ends) becomes corrupted, standard operating systems will see the disc as blank, empty, or unformatted.

Often referred to as "disc rot" or oxidation, this happens when oxygen and moisture penetrate the protective lacquer layer and cause the internal aluminum film to corrode. It usually looks like tiny pinholes or dark bronze discoloration when you hold the disc up to a light source.
